The District Attorney's Office for the Western Judicial Circuit (serving Athens-Clarke and Oconee Counties) is accepting applications for an Assistant District Attorney position to begin work on January 1, 2009. Together, Athens-Clarke County (home of the University of Georgia)and Oconee County have a population of close to 135,000 persons, excluding students. The main office is located in Downtown Athens, within a few blocks of the University and about an hour from Atlanta. It consists of 26 staff members, including 11 ADA's. In addition to the statutory qualifications (O.C.G.A § 15-18-21), candidates with significant litigation experience are preferred. Just as important, however, this office is looking for candidates who possess the following qualities: common sense; good people skills; initiative; integrity, a keen legal mind and skills; a strong sense of right and wrong, balancing justice with fairness; an ability to effectively multi-task, staying calm under pressure; and a sense of personal and community responsibility. ADAs have an opportunity, but are not required, to assist the DA in teaching a Trial Practice class at the University of Georgia Law School. Salary is based on experience.

The Georgia Department of Law/Office of the Attorney General has an immediate opening for a LEGAL SECRETARY. Duties include: providing administrative & legal secretarial support to several attorneys. Typing correspondence, briefs, pleadings, forms, agreements & administrative orders from handwritten notes or dictation; filing pleadings and other legal documents in court as requested; answering the telephone; responding to calls from clients, attorneys and citizens; and providing general information or transferring calls as appropriate; prepares, copies, and faxes or mails a variety of legal documents and correspondence; dockets pleadings and distributes cases as requested; maintains files for the section; maintains records on the assignments of cases; maintains records of leave balances for division personnel; enters time worked for all personnel to the computer; maintains and updates legal references for the division; makes travel arrangements for section personnel; maintains adequate inventory of office supplies; closes files and coordinates the removal of closed files; performs other duties.
Minimum Qualifications for the position are: One year of legal secretarial experience or two years of general secretarial experience which includes a significant amount of typing. The Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT), Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice, seeks experienced State or District Attorneys to serve as Resident Legal Advisors (RLA) to Iraqi courts. These assignments are for a term of 12 months with the possibility of an extension, contingent upon the receipt of additional funding. The successful applicant will normally be detailed to the Department of Justice under the provisions of the Intergovernmental Personnel Act, 5 U.S.C. Sections 3371-3375, for full-time assignments which are fully reimbursable to their offices. The Department of Justice will also consider qualified applicants as "term employees" under the provisions of 5 CFR Part 316, Subpart C.
Each Resident Legal Advisor will represent the Department of Justice and OPDAT as we continue to implement a comprehensive justice sector assistance program in Iraq. The program fosters United States and Iraqi interests through the establishment of a functioning criminal justice system in Iraq. While in Iraq, the Resident Legal Advisor will work closely with indigenous judges and prosecutors. The duties involve working in Iraqi regional courts located outside of Baghdad.
Applicants must have excellent interpersonal, administrative, and mentoring skills, be mature and self-sufficient, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and possess extensive prosecutorial experience. Experience with legal systems in the Middle East or experience with other civil law systems is desired. Knowledge of Arabic is also desired, but not required.
